Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation rental experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Book your Hatteras rental in Fall or Spring months to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Select vacation dates and maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Luxury beach home with beach view, private hot tub, heated pool, & fireplace has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before reserving the rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
Know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
