Strategies for getting the perfect rental home experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Avon. To find the best vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guides which will include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Finding the perfect vacation rental in the Hatteras area:

  • Select a group lead, choose your dates, and select a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Beachfront on the Dunes -- Fall Asleep to the Waves has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property management company before reserving your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what is optimal for your vacation group.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or may be applied to your contract.

More considerations:

  • Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • To make certain that no damages are attributed to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Speak to the property manager right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
