Tricks and tips for getting the best Hatteras vacation home experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • The sooner you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Book your rental in Fall or Spring months to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
  • If there's a particular Hatteras attraction you crave, keep an eye out for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Note any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to stimulate new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental.
