Getting the best vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To get the best value, change your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guides which often include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • To start, have your group decide on the best dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Beautiful house nestled between beach & sound w\/shared pool, WiFi, & central AC has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish which bed configuration is right for your trip.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you must book a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your family require particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.

During your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the property manager immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your life at home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
