Our top Hatteras rental home tips and tricks:
When to visit & When to book:
- The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
- Summertime is high season in Rodanthe. Reserve your Hatteras vacation home in Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to choose the best vacation home in Rodanthe:
- Choose vacation dates and maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Ocean-view home with private outdoor pool, hot tub, central AC, tennis & decks has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
More tips for your visit:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Lock your rental home while you're out. Protect your property!
- Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to stimulate more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
