Strategies to get the best Hatteras rental experience:
Finding your perfect vacation home:
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can book, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental home up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To find the best vacation home within your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides have deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Filter your search:
- Choose a group leader, choose your vacation week, and select a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Oceanfront dog-friendly home w\/prime beach access, foosball table, spacious deck has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the property management company before you reserve the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
During your stay:
- Add the host's contact information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- At departure, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to inspire future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
