Our top Rental home tips and tricks:
Getting the best value:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Reserve your Hatteras rental in Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Selecting the best rental:
- Start by choosing your the best vacation week and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Ocean-view home with private pool, hot tub, two wraparound decks, & central AC has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible online. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you reserve your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your group.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is bringing pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your visit:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- During check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of problems.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- Re-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
