Our top Hatteras vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Get the most from your vacation rental budget:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking your Hatteras vacation home in Fall or Spring months is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guide magazines which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to choose the best vacation home in the Hatteras area:
- Start by selecting your a vacation week and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Waterfront House w\/ Private Hot Tub, Washer\/Dryer, Shared Pool, Central AC, WiFi has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before you book the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
- Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges applied to your invoice.
During your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few problems.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to inspire new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
