Vacation rental tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental home value:
- The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have deals for local shops and restaurants.
How to pick the best rental:
- To start, have your group decide on date ranges and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Family friendly home located directly on a canal with sound access and dock! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish what bed configuration is right for your group.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
- Looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent many problems.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peace. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to inspire new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
