Tips and Tricks for getting the best Hatteras vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. Book your vacation home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have offers and deals for local accommodations and attractions.

Make a plan and pick the perfectrental home:

  • To start, have your group decide on dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Oceanfront Rodanthe condo with community pool! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.

More tips for your stay:

  • Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of problems.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to stimulate future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
