Build a handsome resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest rental units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are literally steps from the beachfront. Bring the bicycles, because Buxton’s unique stores, eateries, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD car - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers).
Back at your vacation home, you'll be met by a completely updated townhouse. Boasting new furnishings, paint, appliances, linens, and floor, you're guaranteed to have a vacation you'll always remember. After a fun day out, relax in the living room and wind down with your favorite shows on the TV. The cavernous, well-equipped kitchen ensures you'll have everything you need to make memorable meals or just modest snacks if that's all you're in the mood for. You'll have access to an outside shower and a patio, ideal for rinsing off after frolicking in the sand earlier in the day. As the day comes to an end, choose from one of the comfortable bedrooms, all of which are equipped with TVs for your viewing enjoyment.
An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape.

Tips and Tricks to get the best Hatteras vacation property experience:
Find your perfect rental:
- To find the best value, shift your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites often offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations and attractions.
Filter your search:
- To start, have your group agree to trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Gorgeous ocean-view townhouse with central AC, private W/D, patio, & pool access has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly accessible online. If not, contact the property owner before reserving your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation group.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
More considerations:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- At Check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many difficulties.
- Be respectful. Often times, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Upon check-out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
