How to book the best vacation rental experience:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Salvo. To get the best value, consider changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- To start, have your group decide on dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Oceanfront Hatteras Island, Pool Table, Sun Deck has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available on booking websites. If not, email the property manager before booking the rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your agreement.
- Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before booking
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make sure that damages are not linked to your stay, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Make contact with the property manager right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
