Strategies to get the very best vacation property experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best vacation home within your budget, we highly recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Hatteras restaurants and activities.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local tours and attractions.
How to select the perfect vacation home in the Hatteras area:
- Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Gorgeous lagoon-front home steps from the sound with private dock & central AC has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, email the host before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
- Some properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
- If there's a specific Hatteras attraction you are enamored with, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
More considerations for your visit:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Be respectful. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
