Tips to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking in Fall or Spring is a great way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to choose and book yourrental:
- Choose your vacation week and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. 3-Bedroom, 2.5-Bathroom Suite at REAL Watersports has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is normally available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what is right for your vacation family.
- Some properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
More considerations:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Keep the property locked while you are away! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to propel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
