Rental property booking tips:
Get the most from your budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Book your vacation in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The sooner you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are reserved early. Reserving your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Planning and choosing the best Hatteras vacation home:
- Start by choosing your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Dog-friendly 4 bedroom house w/private hot tub, WiFi, AC, and ocean views has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what configuration is best for your family.
- Is your family looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Upon check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few concerns.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Keep the property locked while you are away! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
- Upon check-out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
