Our top Vacation rental tips and tricks:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your Hatteras rental home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved very early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to choose the best vacation home in the Hatteras area:
- Start by choosing the best vacation week and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Waterfront & Well-Equipped House w/Free WiFi, Private W/D, Hot Tub & Shared Pool has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is often available online. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you book the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what is right for your group.
- If there's a specific Hatteras destination you love, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
- Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a fantastic source for finding the best local spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
