Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain money saving offers on local accommodations and attractions.

Planning, selecting, and booking yourrental:

  • Choose your vacation dates and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Warm & happy home a short walk from the beach with central AC & screened porch has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to determine which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's a certain Hatteras destination you simply love, browse rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • During arrival, note any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great feedback to compel more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
