How to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
Getting the best rental value:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. To get the best value, try shifting your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Many rental management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Selecting the best vacation home:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Semi-oceanfront house with private pool, hot tub, & ocean views has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is optimal for your family.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
During your stay:
- We recommend storing the owner's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Contact the host immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on great feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
