Tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked early. Reserving your vacation rental 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
  • To book the best rental for your budget, we suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Planning, picking, and booking the bestvacation home:

  • First and foremost, have your group decide on trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Oceanfront, dog-friendly house with private hot tub, pool, AC, & lovely views has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you book the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your agreement.
  • Does your group require unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
  • At Check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Hosts rely on good feedback to stimulate more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
