Our top Rental booking tips:
Sticking to a budget:
- Summer time is high season in the Hatteras area. To book the best vacation home for your budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Hatteras restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Often, management companies supply Hatteras area travel guides which will include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- To start, have your family commit to the best dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. 3-Bedroom, 2.5-Bathroom Penthouse Suite at REAL Watersports has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you book your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts charge additional pet fees.
Considerations for your stay:
- Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
- To make sure damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the host immediately to report any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected everything. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
