Tips to get the very best Hatteras rental experience:
When to reserve a Hatteras rental home & When to go:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the most suitable rental within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at Hatteras restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Many management companies supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Make a plan and choose the best Hatteras rental home:
- Start by having your group commit to trip dates and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Waterfront home w/ private dock, hot tub, charcoal grill, A/C, multiple decks has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- Looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
Know before you go:
- Add the host's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- To make sure that damages aren't linked to your visit, note any problem areas upon check in. Contact the rental manager immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific source for finding the best local scenic spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
