Tricks and tips to get the optimal vacation home experience:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Booking your rental six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain coupons for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Dog-Friendly House with a Private Hot Tub, AC, Shared Pool & Water Views has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, contact the property management company before you book the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If there's a certain Hatteras destination you simply love, look for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners charge additional pet fees.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Add the property manager's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • During arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your life at home. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a excellent vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
