How to book the best Hatteras vacation property experience:
Sticking to a budget:
- Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To book the best vacation home for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.
Selecting the best rental home:
- Select vacation week and spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Condo with fast WiFi & outdoor pool - walk to the ocean & Pamlico Sound has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
Advice for your stay:
- Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of difficulties.
- Respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on good feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
