Strategies to get the very best Hatteras rental home experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Reserve your vacation in Fall or Spring months to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and pick the bestrental:
- Select dates and max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Single-level home on a canal with 2 screened porches - near town and beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If not, email the host before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.
- Looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
More tips for your visit:
- Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many issues.
- Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors disrupting your life at home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
