Strategies for getting the best rental experience:

Finding the best rental home value:

  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Many management companies supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and choose the bestrental home:

  • Choose dates and spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Stay at a beautiful canal front cottage for the price of a hotel. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available online. If not, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or applied to your contract.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking

Advice for a smooth stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Record any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Double-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a excellent stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
