How to find the best Hatteras rental home experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved early. Booking your vacation rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select your dates and budget.
  • Oceanside
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. If not, contact the host before reserving your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your agreement.
  • If there's a certain Hatteras destination you simply love, browse rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

During your stay:

  • We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
  • Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your peace. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on good reviews to stimulate future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
