Rental home tips:
Sticking to a spending budget:
- The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked very early. Booking your vacation property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
How to choose and book your prefectvacation home:
- First, have your family agree to a vacation week and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Paradise awaits! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before booking the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Request information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
Know before you go:
- Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make sure damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, note any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host right away to document any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your life at home. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
