Strategies to get the best vacation home experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Reserve your rental home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Planning, picking, and booking the rightvacation home:
- Select vacation week and maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Updated home with ocean & sound views, screened porch, balcony, pool access has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the host before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your group.
- Does your group require particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
Additional considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- To make sure that damages are not linked to your visit, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. Call the property manager right away to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many issues.
- Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your vacation home while you are out. Keep your property safe!
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to confirm you've collected everything. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
