Strategies to get the optimal vacation property experience:
Finding your perfect vacation home:
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in Rodanthe. To find the largest vacation home within budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and choose a perfect Hatteras rental home:
- Choose vacation week and spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Dog-friendly, idyllic beachfront house with private pool, hot tub, AC, & deck has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking pages. Otherwise, email the property management company before booking the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Have a wonderful stay:
- Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of problems.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are an excellent resource to find the best local scenic spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a great stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
