Our top Hatteras vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are reserved early. Reserving your rental property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your Hatteras vacation rental in Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, travel guides contain deals for nearby tours and attractions.
Planning and picking the right Hatteras vacation home:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. 2-story beach cottage with private patio, screened balcony, AC, & W\/D has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is often available online. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what is right for your vacation.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of problems.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect your property!
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
