Tips and Tricks to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
Get the best value:
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked early. Booking your vacation home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserve your rental property in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- Some property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Many property management companies supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Selecting and booking your prefectvacation home:
- Select a designated group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. The Skipper: Oceanside & Steps from the Ocean! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If not, contact the property manager before reserving the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what is best for your group.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you simply love, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Have a wonderful stay:
- Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of concerns.
- Lock your rental while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
