Buxton rental booking tips and tricks:

When to go & When to book:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To find the best value, try changing your family's Hatteras vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.

Selecting the perfect vacation home:

  • First and foremost, have your family select trip dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Single-level home 350 yards from the beach with sundecks & WiFi - 2 dogs OK has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. If not, email the property owner before booking the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • If there's an individual Hatteras destination you crave, keep an eye out for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Upon check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
