Most of the Outer Banks keeps its guests well connected to all the perceived luxuries of modern life.... Walmart, Target, fast food drive thrus, etc. But an hour's drive south from Nags Head, along a serene strip of sand located between the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean will deliver you to the apex of the Outer Banks, to Cape Hatteras. Think... old Cape Cod fifty plus years ago. We harbor the last real beaches, broad and uncrowded, without corporate influence. About a mile away is the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in America. She has been protecting mariners traversing the rough waters beyond our shores for over a hundred years. Most locals are descendants of those who were on English ships seeking to discover new lands that fell victim to the treacherous seas and shipwrecked before the lighthouse was constructed. Once you arrive here, you'll discover why they never left. Prepare yourself to meet a few.

The iconic oceanfront Outer Banks Motel, on Cape Hatteras, a.k.a. 'Buxton', was constructed right on family land by one of those locals nearly 70 years ago. And continues to be owned and operated by that very local and her family. The OBM continues its tradition of old sea village hospitality but with modern upgrades and advancements to make our guests feel at home here. Having a planned out itinerary is not a necessity... just grab your beach towel, flip flops and a book and walk a few feet to the beach. Close your eyes and ponder the smell of salty air, sun and sea mist grazing your face, the gentle sound of the waves breaking on the beach, while digging your toes in the warm sand while watching the sun rise and set over the water. All that anxiety just melts away.

Every one of the OBMs' cottages and efficiency rooms are unique. Some are directly on the beach, some have superb vistas. All are just feet from the beach. We have a saltwater pool and hot tub located between the main office and the beach. There's a coin operated washer and dryer and ice machine in the back of the main office building located near the fish cleaning station. We provide you with everything you need, and nothing you don't. The local grocery store, many eateries, surf stores and tackle stores are not further than a mile away.
This is our only ground floor oceanside unit. There's a four season porch with rocker and has a partial view of the ocean. It has a full kitchen with a dining table that seats four people. Leather lazy boy.

How to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:

When to visit Buxton & When to reserve a rental home:

  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking your Hatteras vacation home in Fall or Spring months is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Make a plan and choose the rightrental home:

  • Select a group lead, choose your vacation dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Oceanside Accommodations - Efficiency Room with Cooking has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must book a rental that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. .

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas upon check in. Speak to the property manager right away to record your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to inspire more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
