Tips and Tricks to get the best Hatteras vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To find the best value, consider shifting your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Many management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Selecting the best vacation home:
- Start by choosing your vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Oceanfront home in Avon w\/ hot tub has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking websites. If not, email the property management company before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
- If there's an individual Hatteras destination you are crazy about, look for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Some things to know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great time? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
