Rental home tips:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many property management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guides which often include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Choosing the perfect rental:

  • Start by selecting your vacation dates and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Spacious, dog-friendly house with private pool, hot tub, pool table & central AC has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before you book the home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish what is right for your vacation family.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More considerations:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your . Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
  • Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your family vacation.
  • Record any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to drive more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
