Strategies for getting the best rental experience:

When to visit Avon & When to reserve a rental home:

  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • To find the best value, try shifting your family's Hatteras vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many rental management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Planning and choosing the right Hatteras vacation home:

  • First, have your group decide on dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. 2-story ocean-view home with multiple decks, grill, fast WiFi, outdoor pool & AC has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property management company before booking the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.
  • Visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.

More tips for your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Document any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to stimulate new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
