Our top Avon vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

When to book & When to go:

  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Often, management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Select vacation week and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Waterfront Home w\/ Private Hot Tub, Free WiFi, AC, Kayaks, & Washer\/Dryer has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before reserving the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking

During your stay:

  • Get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few issues.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peace. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
