Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your spending budget:
- Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring months is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Narrow your Search:
- Begin by selecting your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Semi-Oceanfront Beach Cottage I. Access across street to shops and restaurants has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If you don't see them listed, email the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what is suitable for your group.
- Does your family require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Get information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
Have a great stay:
- We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on good reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
