Vacation rental tips and tricks:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer time is high season in Hatteras. To find the best value, change your vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Often, management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guides which will include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the perfect vacation home in Hatteras:

  • To start, have your group decide on vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. Quiet private retreat has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish which bed configuration is optimal for your family.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

More considerations:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected everything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great feedback to inspire more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
