Rental booking tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Summer months are high season in Avon. Booking in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes.
- Owners sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitors guides which often include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Begin by selecting vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. High Tide Top Floor Unit B Avon NC has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available on booking websites. Otherwise, email or call the host before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Request information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- Does your group require specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Have a great stay:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many issues.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
