Booking the best vacation home experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Buxton. Booking in the Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select dates and maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Coastal home with three decks, outdoor shower, AC, & W\/D - near beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is right for your trip.
- Does your group require unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
Know before you go:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- To make sure that damages are not attributed to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the rental manager immediately to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific source for finding the best local scenic spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
