Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation rental experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a good way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Planning, picking, and booking the rightrental home:

  • Start by having your family agree to date ranges and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. 1-acre waterfront oasis with pool, hot tubs & sunrise\/set views - dog-friendly has 12 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.

Additional considerations:

  • Get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • To make certain that damages aren't linked to your stay, record any problem areas during check in. Call the rental manager right away to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental while you're away. Keep your property safe!
  • Double-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
