Strategies for getting the perfect Hatteras rental experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked early. Booking your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • To find the best rental within your budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Hatteras restaurants and activities.
  • Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines that include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Planning and picking the best Hatteras rental:

  • First, have your family agree to date ranges and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Oceanside home in Hatteras 200 yards from beach, Hot Tub has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email the property management company before you reserve your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • If there's a particular Hatteras beach you love, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

During your stay:

  • Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • At Check-in, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
