Our top Rental property booking tips:
Money saving strategies:
- The sooner your group can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To book the best vacation home for your budget, we recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Hatteras attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Filter your rental search:
- Choose a group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration you need. Luxury sound-front home with private pool, hot tub, & dock has 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available online. If not, call the property manager before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- Visiting for a single event? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
More tips for your visit:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peaceful home. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
