TOUR HATTERAS ISLAND

Rodanthe North Carolina
Mirlo Beach
Rodanthe is located on the northern end of Hatteras Island, the first village below Oregon Inlet
and The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
This end of the island is famous for celebrating Christmas twice - once on December 25th and again on
Old Christmas, during the first week of January. As part of the celebration of
Old Christmas, Rodanthe welcomes the appearance of "Old Buck", a stuffed bull,
in a custom which dates back to Medieval England.
Today the three villages of Rodanthe, Waves, & Salvo practically join together along Highway 12, but this famous "beach road" did not completely link the island villages until 1953. Until then, they had distinct identities and rivaled one another
in the island trades of fishing, hunting, and lifesaving.
