Frisco History

Before the arrival of the post office, this village was named Trent, or Trent Woods. The point is often made that the Hatteras Island village names were changed because they were difficult to pronounce or spell, but this was certainly not the case here.

As the postal system expanded to incorporate remote regions --and Hatteras Island was truly remote, it was often found that communities had used the same, or very similar, names. To prevent confusion, a new name would be chosen. This was probably the case involving Frisco at the time, though the Postal Service does not currently list another Trent in North Carolina.

General Billy Mitchell is honored with an airfield named for him at Frisco. This famed Army Air Service officer used the local airstrip to demonstrate his talents by bombing battleships off the coast on September 5, 1923. This exhibition was one of the major factors leading to the establishment of the modern United States Air Force.
