Though the seven villages of Hatteras Island share much in common background, there are
some differences. This is difficult to imagine today, as Highway 12 provides a much-traveled
thread of continuity.
However, when one considers their isolation and the effort required to
travel across the dunes or along the surf line in the days before
the beach road, it is easier to comprehend that each community developed its own first families, churches, interests,
and --in some cases-- their own brogue.
