Hatteras Island has become one of the premiere windsurfing destinations on the East Coast. Just south of Avon, the "Canadian Hole" is one of the most popular spots. Windsurfers are drawn by the ever-present winds along the Outer Banks --just as the Wright Brothers were drawn to Kill Devil Hills, sixty miles to the north, in 1903.

The original village is situated on a picturesque harbor, and still retains some of the old-style island homes. Fishing boats still frequent the harbor.
